He was discharged at Charlestown, South Carolina after participation in the battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina in September 1781. At Rest Cemetery Records of Lawrence Country, Tennessee by Alexander & Gresham page 444 Spears, Joseph: From minute book, court of pleas & quarterly Session, Lawrence County, Tenn., November 3, 1818. On this day, Joseph Spears appeared in court and made an affidavit pertaining to his Revolutionary War Service:
He stated that he was about 60 years old. He had belonged to the N.C. Continental Line, enlisting at Salisbury, N.C. and was in Col. Dixon`s Co., under Gen. Green. He was discharged at Charlestown, and had been in the battle of Eutaw Springs, S.C. Joseph Spears probably married during or shortly after his military service. His wife`s name is unknown but she was around the same age as Joseph. Apparently their first child was born in Virginia but by 1790, they were in South Carolina where their son Hasten was born. When they moved to Tennessee is unknown. A son, Hasten probably married his wife, Polly McGee in Maury County, Tennessee on August 20, 1817. Lawrence County, Tennessee was formed from the counties of Maury and Hickman in 1817 and apparently Joseph then owned land that was incorporated in the Lawrence Country. He and his family lived on fifteen acre farm on Knob Creek. Possibly Joseph had brothers John who is shown on 1820 Census in Maury County and William who is shown in 1820 Census in Lawrence County. |
